What does Brigitte mean?
Brigitte means “Traditionally exalted one”.
Brigitte is the French form of Bridget, from the Irish name Brighid. The older name is commonly connected with the idea of being exalted or high. Its Irish history includes both the goddess Brighid and Saint Brigid of Kildare, though their stories belong to different religious settings and should not be treated as one biography.
French actress Brigitte Bardot is a particularly recognizable bearer of this form. Brigitte also has a pronunciation shaped by French, including a soft sound in its middle that differs from English Bridget. The spelling therefore represents an established language tradition, not just an ornamental ending. For families comparing related forms, Bridget, Brigitta, and Brigitte preserve the name's wider history while sounding distinct in everyday use.
