Bridget

Bridget is an English form of Irish Brigid or Brighid, traditionally connected with exaltation and strength. The name belongs both to Irish mythology and to Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland’s principal saints. Those two traditions are related in cultural memory but should not be treated as a single historical person.

Bridie is a familiar affectionate form, while Brigid keeps a closer written connection with the older name. Artist Bridget Riley and the fictional Bridget Jones provide very different modern associations. The full name’s two syllables make it manageable without a nickname, and its Irish history offers a clear reason for choosing it beyond its sound.
