Bronx

Bronx is a place name taken from the New York City borough. The borough's name ultimately comes from the surname of early settler Jonas Bronck, rather than from an English word with a separate baby-name meaning. Its strongest associations are therefore geographical: New York, urban life, and a particular connection to the city.

The single syllable and final x give Bronx a compact, emphatic sound. It belongs beside Brooklyn and Hudson on a place-name shortlist, although its consonant ending feels more abrupt than either. Families with a personal link to the borough may find that connection more meaningful than a dictionary translation. Bronx is already short enough to use comfortably without a nickname.
