Bryant

Bryant is a surname and given name related to Brian. The older name’s meaning is uncertain, so attractive explanations such as strong, honorable, and virtuous should be treated as traditional associations rather than three proven translations. Bryant’s surname history also gives it a route into first-name use distinct from simply adding a letter to Brian.

Poet and editor William Cullen Bryant and basketball player Kobe Bryant are recognizable surname bearers. The final t makes Bryant distinct from Brian in speech and writing. Families may choose it for a surname honor or one of those namesakes, without relying on unsupported claims about how Irish names were used or prohibited in the past.
