Bryer

Bryer is often used as a variation of Briar, the English word for a thorny plant or patch of shrubs. The spelling also has surname connections: some families use it as an English form of German names associated with brewing. Those two histories should be kept separate when explaining a particular child’s name.

Briar and Brier are useful comparisons for the botanical route, while an inherited Bryer surname may preserve a different family story. Bryer’s two-syllable sound remains close to the nature word despite the y spelling. It can be used for boys and girls without changing either of its possible origins.
