Caitlyn

Caitlyn is a modern English spelling of Caitlin, connected with Irish Caitlín and the wider Catherine name family. The familiar meaning “pure” comes from a long-standing association with the Greek word katharos. Catherine’s earliest derivation is debated, so purity is a traditional interpretation rather than a certain explanation of the name’s first origins.

The -lyn ending distinguishes this spelling visually from Caitlin while preserving the same family relationship. Kathleen and Catherine are more distant relatives within that history, rather than interchangeable pronunciations of Caitlyn itself. Cait can provide a shorter everyday form. For parents honoring someone elsewhere in the Catherine family, Caitlyn offers a recognizable connection in a spelling shaped by modern English usage and its adaptation of an older Irish name.
