Calder

Calder comes from British river and place names, with a traditional explanation involving stony or rocky water. Several rivers bear the name, and it became a surname through families associated with those places. Its history therefore combines a landscape description with the later practice of adopting surnames as personal names.

Sculptor Alexander Calder gives the name a strong artistic connection. His suspended moving sculptures, known as mobiles, make Calder especially recognizable in modern art. That association sits naturally beside the river imagery without changing the older meaning. The name’s two syllables and familiar -er ending give it the structure of a surname choice, while its roots provide a specific connection with water and the British landscape.
