Canyon

Canyon is an English landscape word borrowed from Spanish cañón. It describes a deep valley with steep sides, giving the name a clear geographical meaning rather than a reconstructed symbolic phrase. A family may connect it with a specific landscape or choose it for the broader image of dramatic natural scenery.

The older comic-strip character Steve Canyon adds a separate popular-culture association, although the word does not depend on that fictional use. Canyon is distinct from similar-sounding Kenyon, which should not automatically be listed as another spelling of the same name. As a direct word name, Canyon already has a complete form and does not need a longer traditional expansion.
