Carolina

Carolina belongs to the Charles name family, traditionally associated with a free person or man. It is used in several European languages and also has a familiar American place-name association through North and South Carolina. Those connections can provide different personal reasons for choosing it.

Caro, Lina, and Carrie are possible short forms. English-speaking families may use a final sequence like “line,” while Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese commonly have a “lee” sound. Caroline is the related form to compare without the final a. The intended pronunciation is worth introducing rather than assuming the written name settles it.
