Lina

Lina has more than one naming history. In Arabic contexts it is associated with tenderness or softness, while in several European languages it can shorten names such as Carolina. Those routes should be kept distinct: the meaning inherited from a longer name is not automatically the Arabic meaning of Lina.

Four letters and two syllables allow Lina to function easily as an independent given name. It may also preserve the ending of a relative’s name without repeating the whole name. Lena is a nearby spelling worth comparing, though pronunciation can differ between families and languages. Knowing which connection matters to you helps give this small name a more specific story.
