Carver

Carver is an English occupational surname associated with carving. Woodcarving is one familiar application, but the word can also concern other materials. Its history describes an activity or trade rather than a personal quality, so creativity is an understandable association rather than a literal promise embedded in the name.

Scientist and educator George Washington Carver and writer Raymond Carver give the surname two notable cultural connections. Computer scientist Carver Mead is an example of it used as a first name. These bearers provide more specific context than a general description of Carver as artistic. The name can honor a family surname, a public figure, or a craft connection without those reasons being interchangeable.
