Caterina

Caterina is a form of Katherine used in Italian and Catalan. It shares that family's traditional association with purity, through the Greek word katharos, although the earliest derivation of Katherine is uncertain. Pure is consequently best understood as the inherited interpretation, rather than an undisputed literal translation of the oldest name.

Rina is an established shorter form, preserving the final part of Caterina. Katerina and Katherine belong to the same wider family but reflect other spelling traditions. Caterina can keep a particular Italian or Catalan connection recognizable within a family whose relatives use several forms of the name across different languages.
