Cecil

Cecil is traditionally linked with the Roman family name Caecilius, usually associated with Latin caecus, “blind.” That ancient explanation describes the origin of a name family, not the abilities of any modern bearer. The English surname Cecil has its own history, so a surname tribute need not follow exactly the same route as the given name.

Filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille, poet Cecil Day-Lewis, and photographer Cecil Beaton are notable bearers. Their work gives the name several artistic connections across different fields. Cecilio is a related form, while Cecilia belongs to the wider family. Cecil has established historical use for boys and girls, though the balance has varied between periods and communities.
