Chandler

Chandler is an English occupational surname associated with making or selling candles. Its word history comes through French, and the trade supplied a family name before it became a first name. The occupation gives Chandler a concrete meaning rather than an invented translation based on its individual syllables.

Chandler Bing in Friends is an especially recognizable fictional bearer, but the surname’s history is older than the television series. Chandler is used for boys and girls, and the same occupational origin applies to both. Its two-syllable form works without a nickname, while a family surname connection can provide a more personal association than the character.
