Christian

Christian comes from the Latin name tradition meaning “follower of Christ.” It is both a personal name and a word identifying religious belief. “Anointed one” describes the underlying title Christ, rather than being the most direct translation of Christian as a name.

John Bunyan used Christian as the central figure in The Pilgrim’s Progress, giving the name a strong literary connection as well as its religious one. Other associations include designer Christian Dior and actors Christian Bale and Christian Slater. Chris is an established short form, while Cristian, Kristian, and Christiaan reflect alternative spelling traditions. Families may choose Christian to express faith or to honor a relative; either way, the ordinary word remains a recognizable part of how the name is heard.
