Christiana

Christiana is a feminine form of Christian, from Latin Christianus, meaning a Christian or follower of Christ. The word ultimately connects with Greek Christos, “anointed,” the title used for Jesus. The full name therefore has an explicit religious background, even when chosen primarily to honor a relative or preserve a family naming tradition.

Literature provides a notable bearer in the second part of John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, where Christiana undertakes a journey of her own with her children. That allegorical use reflects the name’s meaning directly. Short forms such as Chris, Christie, and Ana offer different everyday options, while Christiana retains the complete Latin-derived form. Christiane and Christianna are related spellings that may align with different family or language preferences.
