Collette

Collette is a spelling variation of Colette, which developed as a short form of Nicolette in French. Through Nicolas and the Greek Nikolaos, it connects with elements meaning victory and people. The name therefore belongs to the broad Nicholas family, even though the shortened form no longer shows the original opening syllable.

The double l distinguishes Collette from the familiar spelling used by the French writer Colette. That literary association may still come to mind, but the author’s name is written with one l. For a family honoring a Nicholas or Nicole, Collette offers a less direct-looking connection through the same name family, with Nicolette providing the clearest bridge between the longer and shorter forms.
