Colton

Colton is an English name traditionally interpreted as “from the coal or dark town.” Its place-related meaning is different from the word colt, a young horse, even though Colt is a familiar short form. That distinction is useful for parents attracted by the name’s possible Western or outdoorsy associations.

Colton keeps a two-syllable rhythm in English, KOHL-tun, while Colt provides a much shorter everyday option. Colten and Kolton are alternative spellings that retain a similar sound. Actor Colton Haynes is one notable bearer, and the name has also appeared in television fiction. A family may choose Colton for the full name or mainly for the nickname, but the older town meaning and the horse-word association should remain separate in its story.
