Crawford

Crawford is a place surname especially familiar in Scotland. Its older elements refer to crows and a ford, a shallow place where people could cross a river. The name originally identified a landscape and people associated with it, rather than describing a bird’s personality or a person’s occupation.

The surname has a long public history through figures such as actress Joan Crawford, although a particular family’s connection may be much older and more personal. As a first name, Crawford preserves the full surname rather than adapting it into a new diminutive. Crawfurd is an established related spelling. Parents may choose Crawford to continue a family line or acknowledge a place, with the river-crossing image providing an additional concrete detail within its history.
