Cristiano

Cristiano is an Italian and Portuguese form of Christian, meaning a Christian or follower of Christ. Its religious meaning comes through the broader Christian name family, rather than identifying the person as the “anointed one” directly. The longer form retains the final o characteristic of this established spelling.

Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is a well-known bearer of the Portuguese form. His prominence supplies a cultural association, but the name predates that namesake. Christian offers a shorter related comparison, while Cristiano preserves its Italian or Portuguese expression. The spoken form can vary between those languages, so the family’s own pronunciation remains an important part of choosing the name.
