Cristofer

Cristofer is a form of Christopher, from Greek elements meaning Christ-bearer. The name had a Christian meaning before the familiar legend of Saint Christopher, whose story describes him carrying a child across a river and discovering that the child is Christ. The story gives a concrete image to the name’s religious meaning.

Cristofer appears particularly in Spanish-speaking contexts, sometimes written Cristófer to mark the intended stress. It is related to, but distinct in form from, Spanish Cristóbal and English Christopher. Families choosing Cristofer may be keeping a faith connection or honoring someone with a related name. The simpler consonant spelling changes its appearance while preserving the central Christ-bearer history.
