Darrell

Darrell developed from an English surname of Norman origin, describing someone from Airelle or Airel in Normandy. The opening d comes from the French preposition de, meaning from, joined to the place name. This geographical history is more securely supported than the familiar baby-name gloss dear one.

The surname later became an established given name, with Darryl and Daryl among its related spellings. American football player Darrell Green and racing driver Darrell Waltrip provide recognizable examples of this exact form. A family may use Darrell to honor a relative or carry forward a surname, while its older roots preserve a connection with the movement of Norman family names into English usage.
