Davie

Davie is an affectionate form of David, a Hebrew name traditionally understood as “beloved.” It is especially familiar in Scottish and other English-speaking naming traditions, where the -ie ending creates an everyday form of the longer name. The biblical King David gives the wider family its best-known ancient association, while Davie reflects a later stage of use.

A family may use David formally and Davie at home, or choose Davie as the complete name. It can honor a David without copying the full spelling, and it has been used for girls as well as boys. Davy is a closely related alternative, while Dave is shorter still. The main story remains a familiar name passed into affectionate use, with its meaning of being loved preserved through the connection to David.
