Dayton

Dayton is an English surname and place name generally connected with Deighton. Its older elements refer to a ditch or dike and a settlement, giving a meaning along the lines of “settlement by a ditch.” The Ohio city is another familiar association for American parents, but the surname’s history is older than its use as a modern place-inspired baby name.

The name shares the clear two-syllable rhythm of Peyton and Clayton while keeping its own origin. Day is an optional short form, though Dayton is brief enough for everyday use without one. Deighton preserves a different traditional spelling, while Dayten is a modern alternative. Parents using Dayton for a meaningful place connection may find that personal story more relevant than the older landscape description.
