Decker

Decker is an occupational surname associated with roofing or covering, particularly in German naming. The job connection explains the name more directly than qualities such as strength or toughness sometimes attached to it. As a first name, it joins other surnames whose original meanings describe practical trades.

A family may use Decker to preserve a surname or choose it independently for its sound. The spelling also resembles the English word used in compounds such as double-decker, an everyday association separate from the ancestral occupation. Decker should not automatically be connected with Dexter or other similar names, which have different histories. Its meaning rests on the covering trade rather than on a modern personality description.
