Deion

Deion is a modern English spelling associated with Dion, a Greek name connected with Zeus. Dion can also function as a short form of names such as Dionysios, giving it a broader classical name family. The elaborate translation “child of heaven and earth” is not necessary to explain Deion’s history or its more recent use.

American athlete Deion Sanders made this particular spelling widely recognizable through his careers in football and baseball. His public nickname, Neon Deion, also highlights the sound many Americans associate with it. The added e distinguishes Deion visually from Dion, although individual pronunciations can vary. Families may choose it for the sporting association, the shorter Greek-related form, or simply the spelling they know through a relative.
