Dion

Dion is a Greek name related to Dionysius and ultimately associated with Dionysus, the god connected with wine and revelry. Its deeper etymology is not clear enough to translate confidently as “child of heaven and earth.” The mythological relationship is the more reliable explanation of its history.

Dion also has ancient historical use, so it is not only a modern shortening or a celebrity surname adopted as a first name. The surname of singer Celine Dion supplies a separate familiar association for many English speakers. Compared with Dionysius, Dion offers a very compact written form while retaining a connection to the longer Greek name family.
