Delanie

Delanie is a modern spelling of the surname-based given name Delaney. The Irish surname comes from Ó Dubhshláine, identifying a descendant of Dubhshláine. Its first element means dark or black, while explanations of the second include challenge or a connection with the River Slaney. Those alternatives make a single neat translation uncertain.

Delaney also has a separate Norman surname route, so family history can matter as much as spelling when tracing its origin. Delanie keeps the familiar sound while using an ie ending. The name may therefore serve as an ancestral tribute, a way to preserve a maternal surname, or an independent first-name choice. Its strongest historical connection is with the surname family rather than with a new compound meaning.
