Denise

Denise is the French feminine form of Denis, a name that comes through Dionysius from the Greek god Dionysos. The name family therefore has classical roots, even though Saint Denis later gave the masculine form a strong Christian association. The deeper construction of the deity’s name is uncertain, making belonging to Dionysos a more useful explanation than a fixed translation of every element.

Denise became widely familiar in English-speaking countries during the twentieth century. Its final -ise gives it a different shape from related forms such as Dionisia, while Dee can serve as a brief everyday shortening. A family may choose it as an established French form or to honor a Denis, Dennis, or Denise in an earlier generation.
