Denzel

Denzel comes from a surname associated with Denzell in Cornwall. It is related to Denzil, a form with a long history of use as a given name. The place-name connection is more securely established than the attractive translation “high stronghold” sometimes attached to it. Actor Denzel Washington gives the spelling a particularly recognizable modern association.

The strong opening and unusual z make Denzel distinctive without requiring a long or complicated form. Denzil offers a close alternative, though families may hear the ending differently depending on accent. Denz is available as an informal shortening. Parents who like surname names but want something beyond the familiar er endings may appreciate Denzel's shape, while a Cornish or family connection can give the choice an additional personal dimension.
