Desire

Desire is an English word name with a history reaching back to early religious naming traditions. In that setting, it could express longing for salvation or closeness to God, rather than only the romantic sense the word may suggest today. Desire Minter, a passenger on the Mayflower, provides a documented example of the name in seventeenth-century life.

The same unaccented spelling can also represent French Désiré, a related but differently pronounced name associated with being desired or wished for. That distinction matters when considering the sound: an English word name and a French personal name may look identical once accents are omitted. A family’s language and intended meaning help determine which tradition Desire carries.
