Desmond

Desmond comes from an Irish geographical name associated with south Munster. Its meaning points to a region rather than a personal virtue or occupation. The name can preserve a connection with Irish history or a family surname while standing independently as a first name.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu provides a notable modern association. Desmond Morris is another familiar bearer, and the name appears in the television series Lost. Des, Dez, and Desi are possible nicknames. Families can choose the full form for its regional history and still use a shorter everyday version without changing the underlying connection.
