Devon

Devon is the name of a county in southwest England, known for its coastline, countryside, and moorland. That geographical connection is the clearest explanation for the given name in this spelling. The county’s older name comes through the history of the region rather than from an English word meaning “poet.”

Devon is used for boys and girls. It is often pronounced with two syllables, like the county, although individual families may use another stress pattern. Devin and Devyn can sound similar but need not have the same history, so they are best compared without merging their meanings. A family tie to the county can give Devon a concrete story of place and belonging.
