Dexter

Dexter has two explanations that are worth keeping separate. As an English surname, it is associated with the occupation of dyeing cloth. The Latin word dexter means “right-handed” or “on the right.” Those meanings can both inform how the name is understood, but they are different linguistic routes rather than one combined translation.

Dex is a natural short form, while the full name has a distinctive x in its middle. Saxophonist Dexter Gordon and characters in film, literature, and television provide a broad range of associations. A family surname connection may carry a different significance from choosing Dexter for its sound or a particular namesake.
