Diane

Diane is the French form of Diana, the name of the Roman goddess associated with hunting, the natural world, and the moon. The older name is connected with a root involving the divine or heavenly. Its mythological background gives Diane a substantial classical story, while the French form has its own later history as a personal name.

The exact spelling has familiar bearers across creative fields, including photographer Diane Arbus, actress Diane Keaton, and designer Diane von Furstenberg. These provide modern associations distinct from the ancient goddess. Diana is the closest related form, while Diane keeps the shorter French ending and a history that crosses mythology, language, and the arts.
