Divine

Divine is an English word name with roots in Latin divinus, referring to a deity or to something godlike. In religious language it can describe sacred qualities, while everyday English also uses it for something exceptionally delightful. Those different uses give the name both spiritual and affectionate possibilities.

As a personal name, Divine belongs with other words adopted directly for their meanings rather than shortened from a longer given name. It has been used for boys and girls. A family may intend a faith connection, an expression of how treasured a child is, or both. The meaning is carried by the ordinary word itself, without requiring a claim that the person will possess particular talents or qualities.
