Dorian

Dorian is strongly associated with Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. The name may refer to the Dorians, an ancient Greek people, rather than derive directly from the Greek word for gift. Its literary history is clearer than interpretations that confidently translate it as either gift or exile.

The Dorian musical mode supplies another cultural association, making the name familiar outside the novel. Dori is a possible personal short form, while Dorien is a related spelling. Dorothy and Dora may look similar but belong to a different name formation. Parents can value Dorian’s literary or musical connections without letting one fictional character determine its entire appeal.
