Dorothea

Dorothea joins the Greek words for gift and God. Theodora uses the same elements in the opposite order, while Dorothy developed as another form of Dorothea. This makes the name part of a recognizable family without reducing its meaning to a similarity in sound.

Dorothea Brooke, the central figure of George Eliot’s Middlemarch, gives the name a substantial literary association. Photographer Dorothea Lange and reformer Dorothea Dix offer real historical namesakes in very different fields. Its traditional short forms include Thea, Dora, Dolly, and Dottie. Dorotea and Dorota provide established language variations, useful for families who want to preserve the name while matching a different linguistic tradition.
