Dottie

Dottie developed as an affectionate form of Dorothy, ultimately related to the Greek Dorothea and its meaning “gift of God.” It has also been used as a full given name in its own right. The familiar ending belongs to the nickname's English history rather than adding another element to the older Greek meaning.

Country singer Dottie West, born Dorothy, illustrates the connection between the short and long forms. Dot makes an even briefer option, while Dotty changes the spelling without changing the basic relationship. Choosing Dottie gives the everyday form its own place on official documents; choosing Dorothy leaves room to alternate between a formal name and its familiar shortening.
