Edmond

Edmond is a French and English form of Edmund, an Old English name combining elements for wealth or prosperity and protection. The meaning is often expressed as “wealthy protector,” though the older elements describe the name’s construction rather than a promise about a child’s future. The o spelling gives this form a slightly different visual character from Edmund.

The name has a particularly strong literary association with Edmond Dantès in Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo. Ed, Eddie, and Ned offer shorter everyday options, while Edmond itself remains compact enough to use in full. Families comparing the two main spellings may prefer Edmond for a French connection or simply because this is the form found in their own family history.
