Eddie

Eddie is a short form of names such as Edward, Edmund, and Edgar, and is also used independently. Those Old English names share an element associated with wealth or prosperity, but their remaining elements differ. Eddie can also arise from other names in family use, so its complete explanation depends on the intended connection.

Ed provides a shorter option, while Eddy is a nearby spelling. Parents may choose Eddie directly when it is the name they expect to use every day, or keep a longer form to preserve a family tradition. The familiar ie ending gives it an informal sound without making it unsuitable as a complete given name throughout life.
