Edison

Edison is an English surname used as a given name. Its ending indicates descent, while explanations of the first element include Eda, a medieval personal name, and forms associated with Adam. Different family histories may account for different surname routes. The familiar connection with inventor Thomas Edison belongs to its later cultural associations, rather than establishing the surname’s original meaning.

Ed and Eddie give Edison everyday short forms, and the three-syllable full name fits alongside other surname choices such as Harrison. Edward shares its opening but has a separate origin. Families choosing Edison to honor an ancestor may find the surname spelling more important than selecting one universal etymological explanation.
