Edson

Edson began as an English surname formed with -son and a short personal name such as Ed or Ede. Those short forms could belong to several longer names, including Edward, Edwin, and Edith. Its history is therefore broader than the single explanation “son of Edward,” even though that is a natural association for modern English speakers.

The name became especially familiar internationally through Brazilian footballer Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé. Edson has an established place in Portuguese-speaking naming traditions as well as in English. The sporting association gives it a clear cultural reference without changing its surname origin. Ed offers a simple shortening, while the full name preserves its distinctive two-syllable rhythm and family-name ending.
