Meaning & origin

What does Efren mean?

Efren means “Fruitful”.

Efren is the unaccented form of Spanish Efrén, related to Ephrem and ultimately to the Hebrew Ephraim. The traditional meaning is fruitful. In Genesis, Ephraim is Joseph’s younger son, and his name is explained through the idea of fruitfulness after hardship. The name later became associated with one of the tribes of Israel.

Saint Ephrem the Syrian, remembered for hymns and theological writing, provides another important connection within this name family. Spanish Efrén normally marks the stressed final syllable with an accent, while Efren is often used in records that omit diacritics. The spelling can therefore preserve a Spanish-language form of an older Hebrew name, with both biblical and later Christian associations available to a family.
