Eliot

Eliot is a spelling in the Elliot name family, which developed through a familiar form of Elias. Elias belongs to the Hebrew Elijah tradition, with the meaning “my God is Yahweh.” The surname route explains how the older religious name reached a form that now looks quite different on the page.

Eliot uses a single l and a single t, making it the shortest of the familiar Eliot, Elliot, and Elliott spellings. The surname also has a literary association with novelist George Eliot. That can be a separate reason to favor this version, rather than a different etymology. Family records may be the best guide when the name is chosen to honor a particular person.
