Ellen

Ellen is an English form of Helen with a long history of independent use. Helen’s original etymology is uncertain, though interpretations involving a torch or shining light are traditional. Ellen carries that familiar light association without being a literal modern English word for brightness. Its shorter shape distinguishes it from elaborate relatives such as Helena and Elena.

The name appears in literature, including Ellen Olenska in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence. Ellie and Nell offer established affectionate possibilities. Ellen itself is concise enough to use every day, with a straightforward two-syllable rhythm. Families seeking an older name may appreciate its recognizable spelling and the choice between a simple full name and a warmer short form.
