Eleni

Eleni is the modern Greek form of Helen, linking a lively three-syllable name with a very old naming tradition. Helen’s original meaning is not settled, although “torch” and associations with shining light are longstanding interpretations. Eleni carries that traditional light connection without needing to be presented as an exact translation of a modern Greek phrase.

It is a full name in its own right, rather than an embellished version of Ellie. Leni and Lena are natural shorter options, while Elenitsa is an affectionate Greek form. Composer Eleni Karaindrou is one notable bearer. For families comparing international Helen forms, Eleni offers a distinctly Greek spelling alongside Elena, Helena, and English Helen.
