Leni

Leni is a German affectionate form used for names such as Helene and Magdalena. Those longer names have different origins: Helene belongs to the Helen family, whose etymology is uncertain, while Magdalena refers to Magdala. Leni therefore does not have one guaranteed meaning of “shining torch” simply because one possible parent name is Helen-related.

Used independently, Leni has a light two-syllable sound and a concise spelling. Pronunciation can vary between languages, so the family's preferred vowels are worth introducing. Lena is a useful nearby comparison, while keeping Helene or Magdalena as the full name offers a more explicit historical connection. For parents honoring a relative, Leni can provide an affectionate link without repeating every syllable of the original name.
