Elmer

Elmer comes from an English name family associated with Old English Æthelmær, combining elements meaning “noble” and “famous.” It also has a surname history. The opening may suggest an elm tree to modern readers, but the tree is a sound association rather than the name’s original literal meaning.

Composer Elmer Bernstein and playwright Elmer Rice are notable bearers, while children may recognize Elmer the patchwork elephant. Those associations differ from the cartoon character Elmer Fudd, showing that the name has more than one cultural reference. Elm is a concise informal option, and Aylmer is a related form to compare. Parents reviving a family Elmer can keep its established spelling and meaning without needing to justify it through a predicted fashion comeback.
