Elsy

Elsy is a spelling of Elsie, a familiar form in the Elizabeth name family. Elsie developed through the Scottish form Elspeth, itself related to Elizabeth. The older Hebrew name is traditionally interpreted as God is my oath, giving this very short form a much longer religious and linguistic history.

The final y changes the written shape of Elsie while keeping its recognizable sound. Elsy can be used as a complete first name or as an affectionate everyday form of a longer family name. For parents honoring an Elizabeth, it offers a connection that is less immediately obvious than Eliza or Beth but still belongs to the same family. Its compact spelling is one reason to compare it with Elsie when deciding how much of the familiar form to preserve.
